Vir, Vir is an island in the Zadar archipelago. It is connected with the mainland via regional road and bridge over Swimmer's ford. The population is engaged in agriculture, fishing and tourism.
The island is bare, exposed to the gusts of winds, except for the wooded northwestern part. The coast is not very well indented; the western side is steeper, while the eastern is more sloping. There are several limestone-hillocks in the highest part of the island, and the ground is most fertile on the northeastern side, where vineyards and orchards are planted.
The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times - Illyrian castle-ruins are proof of this. The Romanic church of St.John was built in the 13. century, while the remnants of several pre-Romanic churches derive from the Middle Ages. The ruins of a Venetian castle date back from the 17. century.
