Ugljan, The island of Ugljan stretches northwest of the island of Pašman, taking up a surface of 50.21 square meters. It is connected with Pašman by a bridge that spans over Ždrelac Passage, and separated from the mainland by the Zadar Channel.
Ugljan is one of the most heavily populated islands in Croatia. All the settlements are on the eastern coast of the island. Some of the more prominent settlements are: Ugljan, Preko, Kali, Kukljica, Lukoran. Muline Cove is in the northwestern part of the island, Big and Small Lamjana are in the southeastern part. The population is engaged in olive-, vine- and frig-growing, as well as tourism. A ferry port from which a connection with Zadar is established is in Preko.
Ugljan had been inhabited since the Neolithic. Numerous remnants of antique buildings were discovered in the north-west, which is proof of heavy population in the Roman Ages. The settlements of today were founded in the Middle Ages.
Kali, The biggest place on the island of Ugljan, which belongs to the Zadar Archipelago,3 km southeast of Preko. Economy is based on farming, viticulture, olive growing, fishing and seafaring. As this place is known as the most important fisherman's centre, do not miss to know its gastronomic specialities. After a day spent on the beautiful beaches of Kali, try excellent fish and shells in some of local restaurants.
Kukljica, is located on the far east end of Ugljan, an island in Zadar's archipelago just before Kornati National Park and Tealscica Nature Park. Situated on a narrow area of land, Kukljica has an exclusive exit onto both shores, north and south, and is thus readily visited by boaters.
It features a number of coves with nice beaches, clear seawater and dense pine forests. Especially interesting are the sand beaches of Sabusa and Delenica on the southern coast of Ugljan, which may be reached only by boat or on foot (there is a trail but there is no access by cars).
Preko, is situated on the island of Ugljan, the most inhabited island of the Zadar Archipelago. It is also a ferry port which connects the island with the town of Zadar. It was inhabited even in Roman times, and it is known today by its historical buildings. The natural beauties of the Kornati National Park and the nature park of Telašćica are within reach of the island and they will make your holidays unforgettable.
The most attractive location for tourists is a beach on the wooded island of Galovac, only 80 m from the centre of Preko. Preko has a number of very good restaurants. Numerous folklore and entertainment programs are organized during the tourist season, the most popular being the so called Prijeska Legrica, a traditional folk feast.
Lukoran,is a quiet and tranquil place in the middle of the island of Ugljan that is connected to the mainland by ferry lines Zadar-Preko. The inhabitants of Lukoran live off of wine and olive growing, as well as tourism. The pebble beach, surrounded by pine forest, is ideal for families with children. There are several excellent restaurants that serve traditional local specialties. Seeing as the island of Ugljan is part of the beautiful Zadar Archipelago, we recommend boat trips to the islands and bays close by.
Lukoran was first mentioned in 1075. In the Middle Ages it was an estate of the Benedictines from Zadar. The graveyard church has Romanesque features; reconstructed in the 17th century. - Below Zmorasnji Lukoran are the remains of a small Gothic church and other structures; a legend has it that they were built by Egyptian monks in the 14th century.
