Šolta, Šolta is an island placed west of the island of Brac, in the mid-Dalmatian archipelago. It is separated from Brac by the Gates of Split, from the Drvenik island group Šolta Channel and from the mainland, once more, the Gates of Split.
The highest peak is Vela straža, while the climate is Mediterranean. Vine-, olive- and fruit-growing, fishing and tourism form the economic basis. The two vastest coves, Rogac and Necujem, are situated on the northeastern shore, which is overgrown by bushes and exposed to northern winds.
Maslinica Cove is a suitable anchorage for smaller yachts as it is exposed to northwestern winds only. A regional roadway runs along the entire length of the island, while ferry ports are in the coves of Rogac, Necujam and Stomorska.
The island was first mentioned under the name of Olyntha in the 4.century BC. The Romans called it Solenta. After Salona was destroyed at the beginning of the 7.century, some of its inhabitants fled to Šolta. In the Middle Ages, the island was attacked several times by the people of Venice and Omiš. A medieval Benedictine monastery is placed above Stomorska, and other monuments can be found in St.Mihovil, Necujam and Donje Selo (Lower Village). In 1537, after the fall of Klis, the island was populated by refugees from the mainland.
